In August 1907, the first professional engineering license was issued to Charles Bellamy in Wyoming. Since that time, licensure has expanded and professional engineers across the U.S. have made the commitment to protect the public health, safety and welfare.
To become licensed professional engineer (PE), candidates must complete a four-year college degree, work under a professional engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and earn a license from their state’s licensure board. Then, to retain their licenses, PEs must continually maintain and improve their skills throughout their careers.
KBS has three professional engineers on staff allowing us to provide a high level of skill to our clients, especially in regard to construction quality assurance, and work more closely with architects and engineers who are licensed.
“At KBS, it is beneficial to have PEs on staff since it raises our measure of competence and provides enhanced status in the eyes our owners, designers and consultants. It is especially beneficial with designers and consultants since they have licenses too,” said Sam Stocks, P.E., Vice President of Operations.
To highlight our PEs, we asked them why they became PEs and what their licenses mean to them. Here are their responses:
“I became a professional engineer to further my professional development in the construction industry and help build stronger relationships with architects and engineers that we work closely with given the similar paths we have taken to obtain and keep our certification. To me, being a PE represents hard work, dedication and a level of competency that are all important qualities to showcase in a challenging and competitive market.” Adam Britt, P.E., Project Manager
“I spend a lot of time working with our project teams on various complicated details and installations. Being a licensed engineer gives me the background to provide professional judgements on these details and what it takes to verify the success of each installation. I became a PE to provide this level of support to KBS and to assist in our dialogue with designers and consultants.” Matt Kamstra, P.E., Corporate Quality Director
“I became a licensed engineer while in the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy. Having this designation was a prerequisite for continued promotion in the officer ranks and I planned to make the Navy a career until I decided to join KBS.” Sam Stocks, P.E., Vice President of Operations
