Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral was established in 1917, but the original structure, which was located on Foushee Avenue, burned down in 1957. There were a couple additions built in the following years, including construction of a new sanctuary in 1960.
KBS work includes partial demolition of the church and asbestos abatement, as well as the construction of a two-story, 30,277-square-foot addition. The new addition houses classrooms, administrative offices, a multipurpose room, and a library. Other features include storage, an open-air courtyard, a 1,850-square-foot kitchen, and a Hellenic Center, which includes a gymnasium with a stage.
Using masonry veneer and precast, KBS was able to construct the new walls to match the existing walls. The casework and millwork was also designed to match the existing cabinets and molding. Other materials required include precast architectural concrete, and structual steel with long-span trusses. The building features stone tile throughout. KBS also took care of all associated site improvements and utilities.
KBS provided value-engineering services, resulting in significant savings to the client. KBS also worked together with the owner to allow full use of the existing sanctuary during construction.
