The project involves the renovation of an existing barracks building, NH-156, on the Norfolk Naval base and the construction of 87 manor homes, 435 two-bedroom apartments, and four community center buildings on three distinct sites: Camp Allen and Camp Elmore in Norfolk and downtown Newport News.
Each distinctly designed manor home consists of 5 two-bedroom apartment units within the three-story, wood-framed structure. Amenities include fitness centers, game rooms, swimming pools, spas, basketball courts and other outdoor recreational facilities.
Military funding through the Navy is provided as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) efforts.
These new apartments are designed to complement the lifestyle of single military employees, as opposed to the more traditional housing offered to military personnel with families. The homes are located in close proximity to their workplace and will be offered at a price that matches their military housing allowance.
The project is scheduled to be completed in phases, the last of which should be finished by the summer of 2009.
