The project included a complete restoration of the original 140,000-square-foot school, built in 1937, as well as a 1962 addition. KBS also constructed 12,000 square feet of new space for a commons area and enlarged gymnasium. All woodwork, including trim, doors, chalkboards and bulletin boards were restored to their 1930's luster.
Thirteen refurbished original maple wardrobes serve as classroom storage units. Four-inch blocks of glazed tile, a common construction material from the 1930-60's were saved from demolition for wall repairs. KBS also preserved the Ashlar pattern of interior concrete masonry units. The auditorium suffered extensive water damage requiring the replacement of the original plaster walls. A special drywall finish now replicates the plaster ceiling.
New mechanical and plumbing systems were installed, as well as new electrical systems that support a technology-enriched curriculum.
