KBS is proud to break ground on a project close to our hearts, the Shady Grove Family YMCA Tommy J. West Aquatic Center. This new indoor aquatic facility will add aquatics space and other amenities to the facility.
This larger, more accessible aquatic center is named in honor of Tommy J. West in recognition of his legacy and the support provided by his family to make this new center possible. West was president and CEO of Capital Interior Contractors and a founding member of the Central Virginia Region of the Virginia Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. He was a leader and friend to many in the Central Virginia construction industry.
“Tommy was an amazing person and a great friend,” said John Gillenwater, vice president of business development. “I am truly honored to help build his legacy at the Shady Grove YMCA.”
The new aquatic center features a warm water pool, double flume waterslide, water basketball hoop and a splash pad water garden.
The existing lap pool will be resurfaced and given updated LED lighting, pool deck and pool pumps. A steam room and sauna will be added and will be accessible from the lap pool deck. Other changes include the renovation of boys locker room, family changing rooms and family locker room, relocation of the Kidzone to the front of building near front desk, and renovations to the massage room.
A memorial gift given by the family of Tommy J. West provides the Shady Grove Family YMCA an opportunity to expand by creating a state of the art aquatic center. Tommy was a champion for the Y who wanted the community to have a place where families could be together in a healthy and wholesome environment. He worked tirelessly to ensure this vision became a reality. A natural leader, Tommy rallied others to support the mission of the YMCA with financial commitments and their service.
“Tommy West had a vision for the Shady Grove Family YMCA and a commitment to make his vision a reality,” said Bill Garrett, capital campaign chair of the Shady Grove Family YMCA. “The Aquatic Center serves as a tremendous legacy for his family. Families throughout our community will spend time together having fun, just as Tommy loved to do with his children.”
Worley Associates Architects designed the new aquatic center. KBS previously worked with Worley Associates Architects on The Country Club of Virginia Aquatic Center.
Construction of the new Tommy J. West Aquatic Center will be complete in Spring 2015.
