The construction industry is, at the end of the day, about bricks and mortar. Our industry, however, has evolved as new technologies have become available. From Building Information Modeling (BIM) to mobile devices, we’ve embraced those technologies as they’ve emerged. Nowhere is this more evident than in the new KBSiQ Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) app when used in conjunction with Plan Grid, a construction document management app.
Designed specifically by KBS and currently in use on our iPads, it allows our project management teams to monitor and impact work flow on the job site in real time, quickly and efficiently.
In the past, a superintendent would identify a problem area on a job site and then head back to the office. Once there, they would dig through our archives and find the appropriate quality control checklist, physically print it, and then head back to the job site, clipboard in hand. As the project grew, the ubiquitous clipboard would grow cluttered with inspection checklists, sketches, RFI’s, and more. KBSiQ allows a field superintendent to have all of the KBS standard checklists for all phases of work on the project. These checklists have been developed by KBS through our experiences and industry standards and KBSiQ allows project superintendents to have all of this valuable information at their fingertips. Quality deficiencies that once took an hour to upload and notify the associated subcontractors now can be submitted for action in a matter of seconds.
With the use of KBSiQ and Plan Grid, our project superintendents are able to manage quality, inspections, drawings, RFI’s, schedules, budget, and safety criteria with a simple click. When conducting a quality inspection, the field superintendent can insert a comment and a photo to a particular checklist item and submit the item to our internal system. This will then be shared with the entire project team and associated subcontractor, providing instantaneous collaboration. All items are further tracked through the application and are removed as they are corrected in the field. This becomes especially useful when tracking common deficiencies and patterns with subcontractors.
Our superintendents find that they’re catching issues faster and achieving resolutions more quickly because there are more people sharing the information, and they are performing their work in the field instead of digging through a stack of forms to provide the proper documentation. This, in turn, has led to better quality construction and higher client satisfaction, with projects increasingly being completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
Someone with a great deal of experience using the app is our Corporate Quality Director, Matt Kamstra. According to Matt, “We get to spend more time actually doing our job instead of providing documentation, and it’s increased our efficiency ten-fold.”
It still comes down to bricks and mortar, but the use of KBSiQ has allowed our teams to improve efficiency and streamline the construction process, with a critical eye toward maintaining the highest standards of quality and accountability.
